Nationals, Pan Am U20 Championships, and Summer Games on the Horizon for Austin Cole

IMG_0449

There was no shortage of action this past weekend at Foote Field when Austin Cole put on his spikes and set his blocks.  After a very successful indoor season with the University of Alberta Golden Bears where he broke a decades old school record in the 300m, Austin remains at the top of his game on the national stage.

Cole, still a junior (U20), currently holds the nation’s top ranked spot in the men’s 400m and sits 3rd in the national rankings for the 200m.  With his goals lofty and set in front of him for the taking, he is primed and ready for what lies ahead.  Ottawa is first on his list as he seeks out to clinch a national title in the 400m and a plausible double with a victory in the 200m.

Once his mark is made on Ottawa, his season continues to heat up as he looks to represent Canada in both 400m individual and relay events at the 2017 Pan American U20 Championships to be held in Trujillo, Peru, from July 17-24.

“A medal in Trujillo is the top goal of the Pan Am meet,” says coach Rob Fisher of the Capital City Track and Field club. “Austin is ready and confident that he can lay down some solid performances to achieves this goal.”

With confidence in his preparation Cole looks forward to medals and victories at all of his major competitions this summer, but the work isn’t done after his return from Peru.  After a short turn around, he has only a couple of days to repack and head off with Team Alberta to the Canada Summer Games to be held in Winnipeg July 27 to August 5. There is no shortage of sprint assignments for Cole during that time where he’ll not only be involved in his individual sprinting events, but also the relays.

“Being ready will be key,” says Coach Fisher. “He has 8 races over 5 days and it will be a true test of his fitness and race management to successfully complete all the rounds and bring home some medals.”

After the Games, Austin will look forward to some well deserved rest and recovery as he’ll prepare for another USport season with U of A. Stay tuned to social media from him (@acole_98) and from Capital City Track Club (@CapCityTC) to follow him on his journey during this incredible time. No matter what uniform you happen to catch him in this summer, you can bet he’ll be in top gear as he hunts down the finish line and leaves the competition in his wake.

Capital City Athletes Named to Canada Summer Games Team

There was no shortage of action at Foote Field on the weekend as it was the sight for the 2017 Foote Field Open and the selection trials for Team Alberta to represent the province at the 50th Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg July 27th to August 5th.  The Capital City Track Club is proud to announce the naming of six athletes to the team that was named after completion of competition on July 25th.

Named to the team this year are sprinters Austin Cole, Daniel Bubelenyi, Grace Werner and Ashley Whiteman. The sprinters are joined by 400m hurdler Calla Isaac and thrower Jen Weber.  Capital City head coach, Rob Fisher, is also the head coach for the Summer Games team and the club also sends throws coach Nathan Lennie who will head up the Paralympic athletes traveling to Winnipeg.

The week will prove to be a busy one for the athletes as they negotiate through competitive rounds in their respective events as they vie for medals and big points for Team Alberta.

Austin Cole looks forward to dominating the 400m and 200m races as well as playing a strong role in the relay events for Alberta while a very versatile female contingent will look to not only excel in their individual events, but will no doubt be looked to answer the call in the relays as well. Veteran thrower and 2016 CanWest Shot Put Champion, Jen Weber, looks to post some personable bests in a big way during the games and she also looks to put some bonus points on the board for Team Alberta in the Javelin, no small feat. Weber looks forward to the challenge and to contributing in any way the team needs.

But before the team heads to Winnipeg, there is other work to be done. There is much preparation and a Provincial Championships to gear up for as they set their sites on Sherwood Park and then on Winnipeg. There is no shortage of work for the athletes, but all are seasoned and will be well prepared.

Stay tuned to our media outlets for updates on their progress and results as they prepare for an incredible summer.

Cap City Athletes Look Back at ASAA Championships and Forward to the Outdoor Season

The 2017 outdoor season is already underway and the Capital City Track Club was well represented at the ASAA High School Provincial Championships.  The championships were once again held at Foote Field this year and there were some strong athlete performances amongst the ranks.

Senior and graduating athlete Catherine Kluyts, a perennial favourite in the 200m, took home the silver medal. Kluyts, clocking a 25.83s and then 25.94s in some blustery wind conditions (-3.2 m/s winds), raced well and represented herself, her school, and the club very well.

Scott Dixon was busy over the weekend winning the bronze medal in the men’s intermediate 400m in 50.82s, a silver in the men’s intermediate sprint hurdles in 13.48s (-1.3 m/s wind) and capping it all off in an very exciting race with a new provincial ASAA 300m hurdles record in a time of 38.31s. Dixon, gapping the field by over three-tenths of a second, took home the gold medal in record time breaking silver medalist and now former record holder, Kai Spierenberg. Both Dixon and Spierenberg came in under the old record time set by Spierenberg the year before.

The high jump saw another annual medal favourite, Wesley Calef, perform as expected with a gold medal in the senior men’s high jump with a performance of 2.00m.  Calef, having to wait around for some time before entering the competition, had some very good attempts at the Pan Am U20 standard of 2.06m and has already jumped one centimeter short of that standard this year. In the intermediate men’s shot put, Haeden Ford placed 9th with his performance; as he focuses more on the hammer throw he was happy with his showing.

Athletes look forward…

As the season marches on, athletes like Kluyts, Dixon, and Calef, look at opportunities to represent both the province and the nation later this summer and are joined by the likes of Daniel Bubelenyi, Grace Werner, Lewis Collins, and more. With both the Canada Summer Games slated for early August in Winnipeg, and the U20 Pan American Championships being held in Lima, Peru July 21-23rd, athletes have much to look forward to this year as they build on both their ASAA and Collegiate success in 2017.

With so much left on the calendars not only for our high school athletes, but also for our collegiate athletes, there will be a lot of action left to follow as we move through the season. Stay in touch with the Capital City Track and Field Club for more success stories as the season goes on. Congratulations to our athletes and coaches – we can’t wait to see what’s next!
