Capital City Athletes Named to Canada Summer Games Team

There was no shortage of action at Foote Field on the weekend as it was the sight for the 2017 Foote Field Open and the selection trials for Team Alberta to represent the province at the 50th Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg July 27th to August 5th.  The Capital City Track Club is proud to announce the naming of six athletes to the team that was named after completion of competition on July 25th.

Named to the team this year are sprinters Austin Cole, Daniel Bubelenyi, Grace Werner and Ashley Whiteman. The sprinters are joined by 400m hurdler Calla Isaac and thrower Jen Weber.  Capital City head coach, Rob Fisher, is also the head coach for the Summer Games team and the club also sends throws coach Nathan Lennie who will head up the Paralympic athletes traveling to Winnipeg.

The week will prove to be a busy one for the athletes as they negotiate through competitive rounds in their respective events as they vie for medals and big points for Team Alberta.

Austin Cole looks forward to dominating the 400m and 200m races as well as playing a strong role in the relay events for Alberta while a very versatile female contingent will look to not only excel in their individual events, but will no doubt be looked to answer the call in the relays as well. Veteran thrower and 2016 CanWest Shot Put Champion, Jen Weber, looks to post some personable bests in a big way during the games and she also looks to put some bonus points on the board for Team Alberta in the Javelin, no small feat. Weber looks forward to the challenge and to contributing in any way the team needs.

But before the team heads to Winnipeg, there is other work to be done. There is much preparation and a Provincial Championships to gear up for as they set their sites on Sherwood Park and then on Winnipeg. There is no shortage of work for the athletes, but all are seasoned and will be well prepared.

Stay tuned to our media outlets for updates on their progress and results as they prepare for an incredible summer.
